How do stacked discounts work?
Stacked discounts are applied sequentially, not additively. Two 20% discounts do not equal 40% off — they equal 36% off (0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64).
Is it better to use a percentage or dollar discount?
It depends on the item price. A $10 off coupon saves more than 15% on items under $66.67. For higher-priced items, percentage discounts usually win.
How do I calculate 30% off in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point left one place, then multiply by 3. For $50: 10% = $5, so 30% = $15. The discounted price is $35.
Do discounts apply before or after tax?
Discounts are applied to the pre-tax price. Sales tax is then calculated on the discounted amount.
